چکیده

We investigated whether 2 stream sampling protocols collected different diatom assemblages within sampling reaches and, consequently, influenced the outcome of bioassessment. We analyzed data collected at 71 sites by both reach-scale (Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program [EMAP]) and targeted-habitat (US Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] Science to Achieve Results [STAR]) sampling protocols as part of the US EPA EMAP survey. Overall, diatom assemblages generated by the 2 protocols were similar. Median Bray–Curtis (BC) similarity between EMAP and STAR diatom counts was 70% (range 19–91%). Taxon richness (r1⁄4 0.7), autecological metrics (e.g., siltation index: r1⁄4 0.9, trophic diatom index: r 1⁄4 0.8), and morphological metrics (e.g., % erect taxa: r 1⁄4 0.7, % prostrate taxa: r 1⁄4 0.8) were comparable between the 2 protocols. Relationships between diatom assemblages (summarized as nonmetric multidimensional scaling ordination axes) and environmental variables were similar between the 2 protocols, with diatom assemblages relating more to instream water-quality variables (e.g., total P, conductivity) than to physical-habitat or watershed characteristics. Diatom assemblages generated by the 2 protocols did diverge under a specific set of environmental conditions. Sites with the lowest BC similarities between EMAP and STAR counts tended to be larger and less shaded and to have higher values of waterquality variables affected by human disturbance (e.g., conductivity, total P, % fine sediment) than sites with higher values of BC similarity between protocols. We conclude that EMAP and STAR sampling protocols, in general, collect similar diatom assemblages. However, researchers should exercise caution when combining diatom data sets collected with different sampling protocols, particularly in large streams, where the potential for sampling of multiple habitats is increased.

Diatom preservation: differential preservation of sedi- mentary diatoms in two saline lakes

The integrity of all sedimentary diatom assemblages is influenced to some degree by taphonomic processes. Recognising these processes with regard to preservation pathways for diatom assemblages and for individual species can be instructive for interpreting sediment core diatom records. Diatoms deposited in saline lakes are usually particularly exposed to both chemical and physical processes tha...

Shifts in mid- to late-Holocene anion composition in Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota): Comparison of diatom and ostracode inferences

The fossil diatom record from Elk Lake (Grant County, Minnesota) was used to reconstruct salinity and brine type between 2640 and 4645 14C yr BP. This lake was selected for a brine-type reconstruction because a previous study using fossil-ostracode assemblages indicated a shift in anion composition during the mid-Holocene (Smith et al., 1997). Salinity was reconstructed using a transfer functio...

Vertical migration behaviour of diatom assemblages of Wadden Sea sediments (Dangast, Germany): a study using cryo-scanning electron microscopy.

The vertical migration behaviour of diatom assemblages inhabiting Wadden Sea sediments near Dangast (Germany) was investigated using cryo-scanning electron microscopy. The diatom assemblages were dominated by small Navicula species. Intertidal sediments which were located at different distances from the high tide level or stayed submerged even throughout low tides were chosen. Samples were prep...

Diatom assemblages and Holocene sea level changes at the Tamatsu site in Kobe, western Japan1)

Diatom assemblages were analysed to clarify the changes in sedimentary environments caused by the Holocene sea level changes, and the results were cross-checked with information from the field observations of sedimentary facies. Diatoms were grouped into three ecological categories; marine, brackish and freshwater. Based on the ecological spectrum of the diatoms, the sediments were divided into...

Stability and endemicity of benthic diatom assemblages from different substrates in a maritime stream on Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, Antarctica: the role of climate variability

Diatom assemblages from four different substrates from a stream on Byers Peninsula were analysed during the summer. The substrate type was the main factor explaining the variability in the diatom assemblages. Sandy biofilms showed a higher diversity and a greater number of endemic species. Two main hydrological regimes were observed: 1) a hydrologically unstable period with high variability in ...
